If you are in search of a rain jacket that suits your requirements, you have arrived at the correct destination. Our team, comprising experienced backpackers and avid gear enthusiasts, have been evaluating rain jackets for an extended period. However, we do not merely compare specifications; instead, we personally wear and test multiple jackets to assess their performance.
Due to the overwhelming number of options in the market, it can be challenging to find the ideal rain jacket. However, we have utilized our extensive knowledge and experience to compile a list of the finest rain jackets. Our primary objective is to efficiently guide you towards the precise product you require, enabling you to make an informed purchase and enjoy the outdoors.
Patagonia Torrentshell 3L
A few years ago, Patagonia released its Torrentshell 3L, which caused a significant impact on the rain jacket market. The jacket’s construction consists of three layers, similar to a hardshell, providing high protection and durability. Additionally, the interior has a soft-touch tricot lining which enhances comfort and reduces the typical clammy feeling found in rain jackets under $200. During testing, the quality of the materials stood out consistently, including features such as the thick-toothed main zipper, pit zips, and three-way adjustable hood, all offering a solid and reliable feel. The Torrentshell 3L also stands out due to Patagonia’s sleek styling, wide range of color options, the addition of a new PFC-free DWR coating for 2023, and the use of 100% recycled face fabric. All of these features, combined with its excellent price of $179, make the Torrentshell 3L our top choice for an all-around rain jacket.
Arc’teryx Beta LT
Arc’teryx is known for its excellent quality and corresponding prices. As a British Columbia-based brand, they have always been our preferred choice for high-end weather protection. However, they recently made changes to their product lineup, specifically relocating their rain shells from the Zeta collection to the versatile Beta series. The Beta LT jacket, which combines 3-layer Gore-Tex construction with several technical features like a hood compatible with helmets and pit zips, challenges the distinction between a rain jacket and a hardshell. It provides reliable performance for hiking and exploring the backcountry all year round. True to the brand’s reputation, the Beta LT jacket showcases meticulous attention to detail, with premium seam taping, streamlined seams, and a trim fit that still allows for layering.
There are many reasons to like the Beta LT. The price is the most notable, as it is an astonishing $450, making it the priciest rain jacket available. It could be considered excessive for summer backpacking or casual use in town.
REI Co-op Rainier
REI’s line of rain shells made in-house consistently impresses us with its value, and the Rainier model is no different. We believe they have created a reliable product overall: The in-house 2.5-layer construction performs effectively even in prolonged light rain, the inclusion of pit zips aids in keeping you cool when on the move, and the sleek design is versatile for various occasions. Additionally, when you factor in REI’s outstanding warranty and the extensive range of colors and sizes available, you obtain a high-quality rain shell suitable for anything from urban commutes to summer hikes and backpacking adventures.
Mountain Hardwear Stretch Ozonic
If comfort is your main concern, you will definitely appreciate the Mountain Hardwear Stretch Ozonic Jacket (available for men and women). The fabric of this jacket is not only stretchy but also soft, providing a relaxed and unrestricted feeling that allows for easy movement. What sets this jacket apart is its exceptional quietness – even with the hood on, you can hear well. Along with its hand pockets, pit-zips, and lightweight design, the Ozonic possesses all the essential features one looks for in a rain jacket, making it suitable for various activities. Above all, we often choose the Ozonic because of its remarkable comfort.
Montbell Versalite
The Montbell Versalite (men’s / women’s) has quickly become the preferred rain jacket for ultralight adventures because of its lightweight nature and inclusion of important features such as hand pockets and pit zips. Similar to other ultralight gear, the Versalite is constructed with thin materials, necessitating a degree of caution when handling it compared to more durable jackets. However, we have been using it without any issues for years, and its weight-saving properties make it an excellent choice for activities like hiking and backpacking. With its competitive price for a premium ultralight jacket, we highly recommend the Versalite to those seeking a means to reduce pack weight.
Black Diamond Stormline Stretch
The Black Diamond Stormline Stretch jacket (men’s / women’s) perfectly combines affordability, high quality construction, and useful features. It is durable for everyday use and lightweight for backcountry trips. The jacket also offers ample adjustments for a personalized fit and enough stretch to go unnoticed during reaching or movement. Overall, it is a highly functional and appealing jacket. Due to its considerate design and reasonable price, we consider the Stormline to be one of the most versatile rain jackets available.
REI Rainier
The REI Rainier rain jacket for men and women has been widely preferred in the industry due to its affordability, well-thought-out design, and the perfect combination of weight and ability to protect against different weather conditions. Having utilized the Rainier extensively during numerous trail journeys, we can confidently say that it has delivered exceptional performance, particularly considering its cost.
The Marmot PreCip (for men and women) is very similar to the Rainier in almost every way. They are both excellent choices for those on a budget, however, we have a slight preference for the Rainier due to its extensive range of colors and wide availability.
Outdoor Research Helium Rain
Outdoor Research’s Helium Rain Jacket, a popular choice for ultralight enthusiasts, underwent significant changes a few seasons ago. The most notable improvement was the addition of Pertex’s Diamond Fuse fabric, which increases durability and tear resistance without adding extra weight. Furthermore, Outdoor Research refined the fit of the jacket, creating a slimmer cut, and it can now be conveniently stuffed into its exterior chest pocket. During our evaluation of the Helium Rain Jacket, we discovered that it remains a reliable option for ultralight and emergency situations: the 2.5-layer construction and DWR coating effectively protect against light to moderate rainfall, the adjustable hood provides comprehensive coverage, and its compact size makes it perfect for a variety of activities such as hiking, backpacking, and climbing.
When choosing the Helium Rain, what compromises should be considered? The thin build can be overwhelmed by heavy downpours, resulting in the fabric absorbing moisture and feeling wet against the skin. Additionally, hand pockets are not included, leaving the single chest pocket as the only storage option. Lastly, it is not suitable for intense performance use as the lining tends to become slippery and clammy, and there are no pit zips to release heat.
