When it comes to finding the perfect balance of protection and support for hiking, look no further than a hiking boot. Unlike other types of hiking footwear, boots are known for their mid-height construction, which provides excellent stability on challenging terrain or when carrying a heavy load. Although there have been recent advancements in lighter and more flexible designs, there are still many high-quality traditional leather options to choose from. In the following sections, we will analyze the top hiking boots of 2023, which range from lightweight designs inspired by trail-runners to versatile all-around models and durable, protective boots specifically designed for mountainous terrain.
Salomon Quest 4 Gore-Tex Hiking Boots
In 2021, Salomon made improvements to its popular Quest boots, transitioning from the 3D version to the 4th generation in both men’s and women’s sizes. Fortunately, the Quest 4 Gore-Tex boots retain the beloved qualities found in the previous model, such as generous toe and heel protection, reliable traction and support, breathable and waterproof materials, and a gusseted tongue. This boot was already highly regarded for its ability to handle heavy loads, and the latest update further enhances its durability by enhancing ankle and heel support specifically designed for carrying weight.
Despite requiring a slightly longer break-in period compared to the previous model, these boots are equipped with a flexible midfoot plate that allows for easier flexing of the foot. Moreover, they have the widest toe box among all the boots we tested, indicating that they are likely to fit a wide variety of foot shapes without the need for adjustments. However, it is worth mentioning that these boots are quite bulky, making them ideal for individuals who carry heavy backpacks or children on their backs. Nonetheless, even on shorter hikes, these boots surprisingly offer a high level of comfort despite their clunkiness.
Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots
The newly updated Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots, available in men’s and women’s sizes, are equally as impressive as their previous versions. They offer a reliable option for budget-conscious hikers without any unnecessary features. For five years, these boots have consistently been one of our top choices. Each time we test them, we find that the Moabs excel in all the important aspects. They are waterproof, although not for extended periods like our other picks. They offer sufficient ankle support for moderate-length hikes, are easy to lace, and provide reasonably good breathability.
We also discovered that they are very comfortable. The improved shock absorption and shaped foot bed noticeably help in preventing foot soreness, particularly on extended hikes. Those with wider feet might find it pleasing that the Moab 2 boots are available in regular and wide widths. Additionally, even the regular width is wider than our other choices. Moreover, these boots are more affordable compared to the majority of the alternatives we have tested.
Vasque Breeze Waterproof Hiking Boot
Over the past few years, we’ve extensively tested the Vasque Breeze hiking boot and have concluded that its most recent version is the best one yet. The updated Vasque Breeze boots (available in men’s and women’s sizes) provide the same comfort as a trail-running shoe while offering the ankle support of a hiking boot. The flexibility of the midfoot allows for easy navigation through challenging terrain and quick movements. Additionally, the boots provide substantial ankle support for carrying heavy packs. Regardless of the type of terrain, the soles of the boots have excellent grip. Although these boots initially felt comfortable right out of the box, they improved even further with use. They molded to our feet during the break-in process, resulting in enhanced comfort after weeks and months of wearing them. As a result, we found ourselves consistently choosing these boots over other alternatives.
The weight of The Breezes is approximately 2 pounds 2 ounces, depending on sizing, making them the lightest of our selections. The lighter weight, combined with the substantial underfoot support, was particularly noticeable after long hikes as our legs and feet were less sore than anticipated. However, the only drawback is that these boots tend to be narrow throughout, resulting in hot spots on the ankle bones for several of our testers. Despite this, the hot spots gradually diminished over time. It is advisable to anticipate a longer break-in period with these boots compared to our other choices. We suggest ordering at least a half-size larger than your regular street-shoe size.
Topo Athletic Trailventure 2 WP
In 2023, lightweight footwear has become dominant, leaving traditional leather boots like the Lowa Renegade with their time and place. The reason for this shift is simple: reducing a few ounces from your feet helps conserve energy and improves comfort over long distances. A prime example of this movement is the Topo Athletic Trailventure 2 WP. While it has the appearance of a trail runner, it possesses the essential qualities of a hiking boot. It offers decent support and stability through an external TPU heel counter, a reasonably tall and padded collar, and a full-length rock plate. However, it also boasts a plush ZipFoam midsole, a minimalist weight, and a stack height of 33 millimeters. This combination allows you to move swiftly and comfortably while traversing great distances. Overall, the Topo Athletic shoe strikes an exceptional balance and is perfect for those who seek to tackle easy trails with a light load.
While we are enthusiastic about lightweight footwear, it is important to recognize the trade-offs that come with it. Specifically, the Trailventure 2 WP’s sleek collar and roomy fit result in less support in uneven trail sections or when carrying a heavy backpack. We particularly experienced this on steep downhill sections, where our feet slid within the shoe, causing our toes to hit the front. However, in other aspects, the Trailventure 2 WP performed well: it provided good protection from rocks and roots, had excellent traction with the Vibram Megagrip outsole, and effectively prevented moisture from entering with its waterproof membrane.
Hoka Anacapa 2 Mid GTX
Recently, hiking boots have become more enjoyable. Hoka, a popular brand of running shoes known for their lightweight and cushioned designs, has made a significant effort to expand into the hiking footwear market. Our favorite option from their collection is the Anacapa 2 Mid, which incorporates Hoka’s well-known bouncy midsole, a curved shape for a smooth experience on the trail, and a reinforced structure that includes durable nubuck leather and a waterproof Gore-Tex liner. During our testing of the Anacapa during a backpacking trip in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, we were delighted with its dynamic nature that combines a nimble sensation similar to a trail runner with unexpectedly good stability and support, reminiscent of a hiking boot.
The recent updates to the Anacapa included a focus on using sustainable materials, as well as making a few notable changes to the midsole and upper. The heel counter was made less intrusive, extra padding was added to the tongue, and the midsole was slightly softened. As a result, the 2 version of the shoe is arguably more comfortable than the previous one. Additionally, Hoka improved the durability and protection of the toe box. However, it was surprising to see that the Vibram Megagrip outsole remains almost the same as before. Similar to the original, it still has large sections of blown rubber that can be easily damaged when used on rockier trails.
