In this guide, I will provide you with the top-rated backpacking destinations globally, as well as my advice on sightseeing and what to anticipate. So, why wait any longer? Let’s uncover the finest backpacking destinations.
Planning On Backpacking The World?
Deciding your destination is the first and possibly the most important step when planning a backpacking trip. Your choice will determine the climate, the culture, as well as costs you’ll face.
When choosing your destination, it’s also important to factor in your personal interests, your budget, and the time you have available.
Some of the most popular backpacking destinations in the world include Southeast Asia, South America, and Europe. These regions offer a mix of affordable costs, rich cultural experiences, diverse landscapes, and well-established backpacker routes.
Remember, backpacking around the world is all about exploration and adventure, so don’t be afraid to step off the beaten path and venture into less frequently visited regions – which can also give you more authentic experiences as well as being cheaper than the tourist hot spots.
Mesopotamia
Dust off paths long forgotten as you uncover routes once trotted by Earth’s earliest civilizations. The Mesopotamia region (now Iraq) showcases evidence of life dating back thousands of years while bringing to light modern cities dedicated to preserving the rich heritage.
Step back in time when wandering the ruins of ancient Babylon in the very footsteps of Mesopotamian royalty and the remaining mud-brick structures of Uruk that puzzle you how the first city was built with such geometric precision. With civilization comes religion, and you’ll be enlightened by the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham at the UNESCO-listed Ziggurat of Ur and villages devoted to the Shia faith.
Riverside settlements along the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers show how Iraq’s two longest rivers were critical for the growth of civilizations—a fact still true to this day.
No matter which path you choose, they will all lead to Baghdad, the capital and cultural center of Iraq. Once there, you can visit the Iraq Museum and other historic institutions that house artifacts which narrate the fascinating history of the region.
Saudi Arabia
Trust us, it’s not a mirage! Saudi Arabia holds much more than vast terrains covered in sand—if you’re feeling adventurous enough to explore it. You’ll be amazed at the people, culture, nature, and historical wonders awaiting you in the largest county on the Arabian Peninsula.
Major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah expose you to the warm, friendly nature of the locals. Explore the vibrant souks for a multi-sensory experience—from colorful and aromatic spices to artisan fabrics made with the softest textures. In contrast, explore remote mountain and cultural villages preserving century-old traditions for their way of life.
Saudi Arabia’s past gives much more appreciation to its cities and towns of today. Set your path towards the AlUla archaeological site to excavate its history, admire 3,000-year-old rock art hidden in the ancient wells of Hima, and petroglyphs found in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jubbah.
The expansive desert is an oasis bringing your Arabian dreams to life. Camp in The Empty Quarter to revel in Arabian pastimes before the night reveals the star-lit sky.
Thailand
Thailand is the ultimate backpacking destination that comes to mind naturally! With its prime location in Southeast Asia and en route to Australia and the Far East, it’s a backpacker’s paradise. Each year, millions of tourists, digital nomads and TEFL teachers are welcomed to this country, whether they’re heading to the stunning southern islands or exploring the mainland.
Thailand has something for everyone, as long as you don’t mind sharing the experience with fellow backpackers. Get ready for glorious sandy beaches, vibrant nightlife, magnificent monuments, temples, and bustling cities.
If you’re a fan of ancient temples, I highly suggest exploring Ayutthaya, just a short train ride from Bangkok. Another option is to head to the centre of the country and visit Sukhothai. Both of these places are ancient Siam Kingdoms and UNESCO heritage sites. If you’re interested in scuba diving, Thailand is also one of the cheapest places to get qualified.
Spain
Spain is another popular destination for backpackers, thanks to its friendly culture, delicious food, and beautiful landscapes. From the bustling cities of Madrid and Barcelona to the picturesque beaches of the Mediterranean coast and the rugged terrain of the Pyrenees Mountains, there is something for everyone in this diverse country.
One of the most popular routes is along the south and into the region of Andalucia. This area is known for its more laid-back approach to life and is home to some of Spain’s most iconic landmarks such as the Alhambra in Granada and the Mezquita in Cordoba.
I’ve explored lots of Spain over the years and it is definitely one of my favourite countries in Europe.
Alaska
There isn’t just one way to explore Alaska. The best adventures let you experience it from multiple perspectives—air, water, and land. It’s time to include all three in your travel plans to the last frontier.
Listen to the engine’s roar as a bush plane takes off into the chilly skies above the Yukon River Flats. The arctic landscape will take your breath away while giving you a chance to spot any nearby wildlife and wildflowers! Land in the summits of the Brooks Range for the headwaters of the Hula Hula River. Strap on your life vest because this 100-mile whitewater rafting expedition is not for the faint of heart. Flow directly into the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, where you’ll have a chance to encounter the local residents—grizzly bears, Dall sheep, Musk oxen, and more.
Croatia
Located on the Adriatic Sea, Croatia has quickly become a top destination for backpackers. With its beautiful beaches, charming old towns and stunning national parks, it’s not hard to see why.
One of the most popular routes for backpacking in Croatia is along the Dalmatian coast from Split to Dubrovnik. Along the way, you’ll find picturesque islands, like Hvar and Korcula, and plenty of opportunities for island hopping.
I’ve visited Croatia several times and as much as I love Dubrovnik – it does get insanely busy. Some of my best experiences in Croatia have been when I’ve gotten off the beaten track. The countryside and adventure spots scene here is excellent.
Greece
Greece is the ultimate backpacking destination. With its ancient history, beautiful islands, delicious food and friendly locals, Greece has something for everyone.
The most popular route for backpacking in Greece is through the Greek Islands Starting from Athens, travellers can island hop – by either a mini cruise or on a ferry to explore some of the most stunning islands, such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Corfu. However, during peak season, these islands come with a hefty price tag – so I strongly advise visiting in the shoulder or off-season to make your backpacker bucks go further.
As a huge fan of ancient ruins Greece was a haven for me. It’s home to some of the most famous historical sites in the world, such as the Acropolis in Athens and the Parthenon temple.
